A minimum of 13 people perish and 98 wounded in train derailment in Mexico.
A deadly train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite critical opposition regarding the rapidity and management of the country's major government projects.
The crash happened on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a route built to join the Atlantic and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was intended to establish an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving regional growth in the area.
“We shall thoroughly investigate the reasons behind this tragedy,” declared the national leader.
The leader announced that, of the approximately 250 individuals on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in grave condition. The president noted plans to travel to Oaxaca to confer with those impacted.
Key Undertaking of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a signature infrastructure project of the former leader, whose presidency concluded the year before. This project was closely associated with his leadership's economic goals for the southeastern region.
Another multi-billion dollar train initiative from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the comprehensive effort to kickstart the economy of a historically poorer part of the country.
Building Management and Safety Concerns
The construction of both train projects was overseen by the armed forces, marking a notable expansion of its responsibilities in public infrastructure. They were built at an fast-tracked pace, beating forecasts to be at least partly launched before the end of that government.
However, this rushed timetable had also fueled ongoing apprehensions over safety standards.
- Sunday's crash was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This involves an earlier collision this month when a train hit a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen several non-deadly derailments.
Calls for Audit and Pause
In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the head of a key rival party demanded an prompt suspension in the construction and operation of all similar projects.
This pause was suggested pending a comprehensive safety audit. The party declared that the tragedy "calls for swift accountability."
In reaction, the national leader maintained that the train had been functioning in total compliance with all security protocols. Promises were given that the government would be "diligent" in both the construction and operation of these vital undertakings.
